When Y was searching for an iPhone 4 after its launch, it was not available anywhere near NYC. Sold out across the tri-state area and beyond, with a month wait for online orders.
I had a suspicion things would be more reasonable in Canada, and they were. We had a Ontarian relative pick one up that same day and hold it for us, and Y collected it around Canadian Thanksgiving.
I have a theory as to why there were more available in Canada. As soon as the locals saw the US news highlights (‘lines into the street!’, ‘gangs reselling for high markups!’) they stopped.
‘Oh, no, I can wait. Better let someone else go ahead, ey.’ Oh, Canada.
